Costco has announced new guidelines for its stores and is requiring all customers—age 3 and older—to wear masks before entering stores beginning Monday, May 4.

"In short, we believe this is the right thing to do under the current circumstances," Costco CEO Craig Jelinek said in a statement. "Although some may disagree with this policy or question its effectiveness, we’re choosing to err on the side of safety in our shopping environments."

What's more, stores are limiting fresh meat purchases (beef, pork and poultry products) to a total of three items per member.

Long lines have been developing at some stores and Costco is temporarily allowing healthcare workers and first responders such as police officers and EMTs to move to the front of the line.

Costco cut back its open hours last month, but starting May 4, most locations are returning to regular operating hours. Also effective May 4, Costco warehouses will open 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., Monday through Friday for members ages 60 and older, and people with disabilities.

Last month, Costco began allowing only two people to enter the warehouse with each membership card. This is still the case.
