Mike Aresco is with family over the Thanksgiving holiday and will watch Friday’s matchup between Memphis and Cincinnati from the comfort of his home. But the commissioner of the American Athletic Conference will be in one of the two cities the following Saturday for the league title game.

“They may end up playing each other again,” Aresco said this week. “We’ll see.”

The scenario that would create the least drama for Aresco and the conference would be for either the Bearcats or Tigers to win out over the final two games, giving that team a clear path to the Group of 5’s slot in the Cotton Bowl. But on the very real chance that a two-loss champion emerges from the AAC, it seems unlikely at the current moment that they would beat out a potential one-loss Boise State or Appalachian State for that coveted New Year’s Six bid.
