SAD announces Mahesh Inder Singh as party nominee from Ludhiana

Senior Akali leader and former cabinet minister Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal will contest from the Ludhiana constituency in the Lok Sabha polls, a party functionary said Saturday. Harcharan Bains, advisor to SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, said the names of the remaining candidates would be announced shortly. Grewal, a senior and traditional Akali stalwart with a strong Panthic image, enjoys a wide secular base. With this, the SAD has announced eight of its 10 candidates from Punjab. Its alliance partner the BJP is contesting from the other three seats -- Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur.

Miffed over denial of ticket by the RJD from Madhubani, former union minister Mohammad Ali Ashraf Fatmi Saturday virtually rebelled against the party and announced to contest election from Madhubani Lok Sabha seat against the Grand Alliance candidate. Fatmi also gave an ultimatum to the party stating that he would wait for its decision about him till April 18, when he would file nomination papers from Madhubani seat. I have taken a decision to contest election from Madhubani Lok Sabha seat and will file nomination papers on April 18. The party has time till April 18 to decide as what it can do for me, otherwise I will be compelled to file papers, Fatmi told reporters.

EC seizes Rs 552.23 crore unaccounted cash, jewellery in TN

Unaccounted cash, gold and other valuable items worth Rs 552.23 crore have been seized in Tamil Nadu since the Model Code of Conduct came into effect on March 10, the Election Commission said Saturday. Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo said Rs 129.51 crore in cash has been recovered till Friday. Gold and silver ornaments, besides liquor, laptops and clothes worth Rs 422.72 crore were seized since the code of conduct came into effect, he told reporters here. On preparations for the April 18 Lok Sabha elections, he said 5,874 zonal teams have been formed to take up poll related work.

AIADMK leader and Tamil film actor J K Ritheesh died Saturday due to a sudden cardiac arrest while he was engaged in election related work, the party said. The 46-year old former Lok Sabha MP from Ramanathapuram died after he suffered a heart attack while attending to poll related work in Ramanathapuram district and despite being rushed to a hospital, the AIADMK said.

83.12 per cent polling recorded in lone Nagaland LS seat

An overall 83.12 per cent voter turnout was recorded in Nagaland for the lone Lok Sabha constituency, on April 11, a senior election official said on Saturday. For the 26-Aonglenden bye-poll, held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha elections, around 84.35 per cent voters cast their ballots, Nagaland Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Abhijit Sinha said. Interacting with media persons here, the CEO said altogether 10,02,670 electorate out of 12,06,287 general voters exercised their franchise for the Lok Sabha polls in the state.

Giving her own twist to a recent remark by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, BSP chief Mayawati Saturday said her party wanted both Ali and Bajrang Bali -- particularly Bajrang Bali as the deity is "linked with my own Dalit caste". Addressing a rally in Badaun, Mayawati recalled Adityanath's comment on Tuesday in which he referred to her earlier appeal to Muslims to vote for the opposition alliance in Uttar Pradesh. "In this connection, I want to tell him (Adityanath) that both Ali and Bajrang Bali are ours.... So we want both Ali as well as Bajrang Bali," she said.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday met Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora here and submitted a memorandum alleging that a large number of EVMs malfunctioned during polling in the state on Thursday and inadequate security led to incidents of violence. Questioning the transfer of several officials ahead of voting, he alleged the poll body "failed to live up to the spirit of constitutional duty" during elections in Andhra Pradesh which was "dangerous for the future of democracy in the country". The TDP chief also demanded that the EC return to the ballot paper system.

Ram Navami rallies were taken out in West Midnapore, Purulia, Jhargram, Bankura, Howrah, Kolkata and in North and South 24 Parganas districts among others, officials said. At Kharagpur in West Midnapore, BJP state president Dilip Ghosh took out Ram Navami rallies and were seen displaying swords and maces.

3-tier security at strongrooms containing EVMs in Telangana: Official

A three-tier security comprising the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and the state police will be in place at strongrooms to guard the electronic voting machines (EVMs) till May 23 in Telangana, a top state Election Commission official said Saturday. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Rajat Kumar said the process of receiving EVMs from all the booths across the state began Friday. Polling to the 17 Lok Sabha constituencies was held in a single phase in Telangana on April 11. Kumar, in a statement, said the EVMs will be stored in strongrooms across the state till the scheduled day of counting on May 23. He said the strongrooms containing EVMs will be guarded round-the-clock by a three-tier perimeter.

'Sabarimala Karma Samithi', which had spearheaded the agitation against the CPI(M)-led LDF government's decision to implement the Supreme Court September 28 verdict permitting women of all age groups into the shrine, alleged that their members had been implicated in various criminal cases "unlawfully".
